Davis-Monthan Air Force Base

My father, Richard Lockett, and I were escorted on a tour of the Military Aircraft Storage and Disposition Center (MASDC) at Davis-Monthan Air Force Base on November 12, 1973. Before the tour we visited the scrap yards south f the base. After the tour we took pictures of airplnaes in the landing pattern.

Boeing 367-80 Stratoliner Prototype N70700 is the prototype of all Boeing jetliners. It is not a 707. It is a jet-powered development of the model 367 Stratofreighter (C-97). It carries construction number 17158. It has always been registered as N70700. It first flew on July 15, 1954. After serving as a testbed for a multitude of projects, it was retired to MASDC in 1969. It ia now on display at the Udvar Hazy Annex of the National Air and Space Museum.

Although the NB-52A had been retired four years earlier, the liquid oxygen system had been kept pressurized with nitrogen gas to prevent corrosion and allow for its return to service if the NB-52B needed replacing.

Search and rescue Boeing HC-97G Stratofreighter 53-0173 of the 303rd ARRS was built as a KC-97G. Its construction number is 16955. It was retired to MASDC as CH0527 on June 23, 1972.
